    Population two, none higher!

1938 Goudey Joe DiMaggio #250 PSA Mint 9. "DiMaggio was the greatest all-around player I ever saw. His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound and lasting impact on the country." It was the great Ted Williams who made this assessment, a man whose own brilliance was consistently measured against that of his Yankee counterpart. While Williams was a single-minded workhorse, DiMaggio made the game seem easy, working the lumber and the leather with a calm fluidity that bordered on the magical. Born to poor Italian immigrants, DiMaggio would rise to the heights of achievement and celebrity, effectively serving as the living embodiment of the American dream.

This light-hearted issue finds the young icon near the start of his rise to immortality, enjoying the third of a four-season Championship reign in the Bronx. With the noble Lou Gehrig dipping below the .300 mark for the first time since his mighty streak began, a sad harbinger to the tragedy that awaited him, the young outfielder took full command of the Yankee juggernaut this year, leading the team in average (.324), home runs (32) and runs batted in (140). Quite reasonably, the two DiMaggio representations serve as the key cards of this issue.

This is the rarer of the pair, both in total PSA submissions and at this elite grading level. With bright coloring, perfect image registration, faultless centering and clean surfaces, the specimen leads us on a fruitless hunt for condition caveats. A truly spectacular rarity for the advanced collector.
