1938 Goudey Jimmy Foxx #249 SGC 96 Mint 9 - Pop Two, Highest Grade on Record! Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Gomez once said "He has muscles in his hair." He was referring to National League's answer to the Babe - slugger Jimmy Foxx. The 500 Home Run Club became a duo during the final week of the 1940 season when Foxx joined Ruth in long ball immortality. One of the most feared right-handed hitters in baseball history, Foxx was a key force in breaking the 1920's Yankees' stranglehold on the American League, supplying Philadelphia with three pennants and two World Championships during Connie Mack's second great Athletics dynasty. His biography claims he may have actually trumped Babe Ruth as the first World Series "Called Shot." According to Mark Millikin's definitive biography on Jimmie Foxx he is quoted, "(In the 1930 World Series) Before grabbing his bat, Foxx yelled back to the players on the bench, 'I'll bust up the game right now!' Jimmie caught one of Grimes' high, fast, curveballs and walloped it into the left-center field bleachers... as a stunned crowd at Sportsman's Park looked on. Thankfully his career spanned the era when trading cards were filling store shelves giving hobbyists a choice of cards to pursue but let's face it, we want them all.Graded SGC 96 Mint 9, this card is one of a pair to earn the coveted 96 Mint 9 level with SGC. Centering is about as perfect as one could hope for; Corner tips all come to precise 90-degree angles; Surfaces are problem-free, a slight haze of toning is all that exists to hint that the card is over 75-years old. His "Heads-Up" appearances are his most scarce with the Goudey brand and the most condition sensitive. To date, SGC has only anointed the "Mint" label to a total of ten 1938 Goudey cards, Foxx accounts for two of those coveted near-pristine gems.
