    Description

1933 Sport Kings Bobby Jones #38 SGC 96 Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher! After Francis Ouimet's dramatic win in the 1913 US Open, America was ready for an American golf hero and in Bobby Jones, they found one. Winner of an astonishing thirteen majors in eight years (1923-1930), Jones retired at age twenty-eight after completing the then unheard of achievement of winning all four majors in one year. The legendary golfer Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. was a year away from his sweep of the Grand Slam of golf which was one of the great spectator sports of the era, much on par with baseball and boxing. In fact, Jones was more admired in his era than any other golfer from any other era, even Tiger Woods in his prime. The 1933 Sports King series was devoted to the greatest names of a multitude of sporting endeavors. With golf as one featured sport, naturally Bobby Jones makes an appearance. Although this card may seem small in size, this is certainly one of the more significant vintage golf collectibles. Bobby Jones was a beloved figure of the game and who held a reverence not seen until Tiger Woods hit the fairways. This example of card #38 has deep colors, near perfect centering and precise registration. The hint of wear at two corner tips and some slight surface age toning is the limit of our criticism. Graded SGC 96 Mint 9. One of two at the 96 Mint level with none grading higher.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
