Description

1933 Sport Kings Babe Ruth #2 SGC NM 7. By the start of the 1933 MLB season, New York Yankees icon Babe Ruth's career was winding down. This would mark the final season he hit better than .300, one in which he still belted 34 home runs and knocked in 104 runs. He was passing the torch, so to speak, to teammate Lou Gehrig, who would lead the league the following season in both home runs (49) and runs batted in (166). Ruth's career in pinstripes was still one year away from ending, but it appeared the Bambino was more than content with simply taking a victory lap.

The Goudey Gum Company was on a roll in the early 1930s, and they issued this classic set, titled "Sport Kings," that features a mix of athletes across many different disciplines including names like Red Grange, Jim Thorpe, Bobby Jones and Babe Didrickson. The "Sultan of Swat," of course, was always a favorite amongst collectors and this card of Ruth's received plenty of attention upon its release. The offered example of card #2 from the '33 Sport Kings set exhibits outstanding color, nice centering, four good corners, and a reverse that has held up incredibly well over the past 90-plus years. Ruth's grin on the card front is a fitting tribute to the man who entertained so many fans over the years. Graded SGC NM 7.
