1933 Sport Kings Babe Ruth #2 SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. The sales success of the 1933 Goudey baseball series must have been an instant phenomenon, as the same year Goudey, under their "Sport Kings Gum" brand, produced a 48-card parade of champions that featured only the greatest of the great from a multitude of sporting endeavors. Although only one-fifth the size, Sport Kings are today recognized as one of the most popular and significant sets of the early-1930's era. With a roster that doesn't have one "common" athlete, the set's appeal even eight decades later comes as no surprise. Names like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Red Grange, Jim Thorpe, Walter Hagen, Bill Tilden, Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, Eddie Shore, Duke Kahanamoku, Johnny Weissmuller, Gene Sarazen, Carl Hubbell, Howie Morenz, Knute Rockne, Bobby Jones, Max Baer and Babe Didrikson and more are all honored as "Kings" of their craft. Every champion's portrait shares the same gorgeous artistic sensibilities, allowing this issue to rank as the most popular of all multi-sport card promotions.As is the case of every issue to include his image, the Babe rates as the key card in the set, and here he grades an impressive SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. From a total number of submissions standing at 131, this card is among the finest examples known. All the earmarks befitting a card deemed to be among the finest known are present. Centering is so very close to perfect, colors have remained rich and vibrant, surfaces are clean and free of dirt, stains, etc. Traces of wear affecting the top and bottom-most layers at corner tips stand as the main rationale for the SGC assessment. It's a beautiful gem that exudes excellence, from a series dedicated to excellence.
