1933 R308-2 Tattoo Orbit Jimmie Foxx, Large #153 SGC 20 Fair 1.5 - One of Less Than a Handful of R308-2s Known! Hobbyists refer to the R308-2 or "Large Tattoo Orbit" cards because they are almost twice as large (2-3/8" x 3-3/4") as the R308 -1 cards which measure 1-1/4" x 1-7/8." From an era when people didn't even pump their own gasoline, Orbit Gum thought kids would want to develop their own cards. When your choices are to develop your own and possibly be left with a faded Black & White picture or buy a Goudey pack where you can see the glorious color through the wrapper, it seems like a no-brainer. Sure, the concept seems fun to kids but children are also the toughest customers and a faded portrait just wasn't going to pass muster. The larger size card may have been an attempt to boost sales but it was too little too late as the concept failed resulting in an extremely low supply left for modern hobbyists to fight over. Offered is a rare 1933 R308-2 Tattoo Orbit of 500-Home Run Club member Jimmie Foxx. The full-figure portrait has typical fading and small spots of paper on the reverse. Graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5, this is one of only two example graded by SGC with no mention to the type 1 vs Type 2. This is one of only two or three R308-2s that have come up for auction in the last 15 years.
