Description
1933 Goudey Rogers Hornsby #119 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher. Only Babe Ruth, kept the name Rogers Hornsby as the name associated with Golden Age batting brilliance. Compared to only Ty Cobb does one see parallels between the two and they are striking--beyond their positioning at numbers one and two on the career batting average ladder. Each brought a gritty Southern determination to his craft, refusing to hang up the spikes until age forty-one. Both had suffered shocking family tragedy--Cobb's father and Hornsby's brother each shot to death. In addition, after nearly 20,000 combined at bats, just a single strike out separates their respective totals. The clear divide between these two is the home run. Hornsby claimed the Triple Crown in 1922 and 1925, clubbing forty-two and thirty-nine homers respectively. Cobb's single Triple Crown in 1909 was achieved with just nine Dead Ball dingers. It is ironic that those two seasons were off years for the Babe who hit only 35 homers in 1922 and 25 in 1925. Between 1920 through 1929, the hard-slugging Texan bested the fabled .400 plateau three times, claiming the National League batting title all but three years of the decade."Rajah" was also one of baseball's greatest personalities. "I don't like to sound egotistical," Hornsby was once quoted to say, "but every time I stepped up to the plate with a bat in my hands, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the pitcher." Sports journalist Lee Allen once wrote, "He was frank to the point of being cruel and as subtle as a belch."
