Description

1933 Goudey Napoleon Lajoie #106 SGC 30 Good 2. Only the famous Honus Wagner card of the T206 series has manifested a greater divide between card collectors who fervently want to own the card and those who have the means and luck to actually own one. We are pleased to be able to allowing one lucky member of the Heritage bidding clientele to graduate from the "have not" team to the so satisfying "have" team. Various theories have been presented as to why card #106 never made it into 1933 Goudey packs. The optimist will say it was mere human oversight, the same Lou Gehrig card appears twice, using two different numbers, and we all know card #144 of Ruth is found twice on the same sheet. Did they intend to do the same with Ruth but #'s 106 and 144 were too close together to be explained? The cynic will claim it was to encourage sales knowing that youngsters will want to desperately complete their treasured sets. The exact reason continues to be lost to history. Our thanks must be offered to the young Depression-era set builders, who would not be deterred by the fact that card number 106 was not available in standard wax packs and got mom and/or dad to take pen in hand and let Goudey Gum know this was unacceptable. Those letters, mailed to the Boston offices of Goudey Gum Co., resulted in this, the toughest of all cards from this as we assume went out to only those who asked for card #106 which was eventually printed with the scarce high numbers of the 1934 Goudey edition. This certainly would account for its terrific scarcity today. Graded SGC 30 Good 2. There are small spots of paper adhered to the reverse as well as toning of the surface. The front shows much, much, lighter toning and some light soiling. Corners have a consistent mild rounding that if nothing else suggests its true age. This example found its way into a scrapbook of treasured mementos, a victory over the mammoth gum corporation, with each pass of said page a sense of pride via a beaming smile, even Lajoie's smirk suggests a "way to go kid."
