Description
1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 PSA NM 7. Hall of Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig, the "Iron Horse," was one of the greatest players who ever donned the vaunted pinstripes of the New York Yankees His longstanding record of starting in 2,130 consecutive games stood for 56 years until Baltimore's Cal Ripken Jr. finally eclipsed it on Sept. 6, 1995. Gehrig was known for both his durability as well as his power at the plate. Over 17 seasons with the Bronx Bombers, he belted 493 home runs (including 23 grand slams) and drove in 1,995 runs. Unfortunately his stellar career was cut short in 1937 at the age of 35 by a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that now bears his name. He died two years later on June 2, 1941. He was 37.Offered is a 1933 Goudey card that captures Gehrig at the top of his game. In 1932, he batted .349 with 34 home runs and he followed that effort up with a .334 campaign and 32 homers in '33. Coveted for its historical significance and connection to one of baseball's true icons, the presented Gehrig card (#92) would easily become the cornerstone of any vintage collection. With his name printed in bold blue in the top right corner, the card shows the master batsman ready to send another incoming pitch skyward. One of only two cards from the set that feature Gehrig, this example is found in Near Mint condition with rich color, decent centering and a clean reverse. Graded PSA NM 7.
