Description

1933 Goudey Dizzy Dean #223 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher! "When ole Diz was out there pitching it was more than just another ballgame. It was a regular three-ring circus and everybody was wide awake and enjoying being alive," once said fellow Gashouse Gangster Pepper Martin of Dizzy Dean, who will always be one of baseball's most colorful personalities. He also stated he could strike out Vince DiMaggio four times in a game, and on the fourth at-bat when DiMaggio hit a short pop-up, Dizzy yelled at the catcher to drop the ball so he could face him again and get the final strikeout... which he did. Never one to shy away from a prediction. He boasted he and brother Paul "Daffy" Dean would combine for forty-five wins in 1934... which they did. The St. Louis Cardinals had made a practice of taking the field in sweaty, unwashed uniforms and a Leo Durocher quip gave birth to the nickname "The Gashouse Gang" of which Dizzy Dean was an integral part of both building on that reputation for slovenliness as much as for their reputation for on the field success. Had it not been for injuries, Dean would certainly have racked up a lot more than his 150 victories, especially after winning thirty games in 1934 and another twenty-eight the following season.

Graded PSA Mint 9. This card is one of just two survivors known to earn a "Mint 9" grade and there are none rated higher. This card is one of the finest period remembrances of "Ol' Diz," beautifully rendered and designed free of distractions from caption blocks or other gratuitous clutter. The scene belongs only to the National League star and is a hobby classic. It is a card that is able to evoke feelings of nostalgia with a mere glance. Free of the blemishes, surface marring, scratches, gratuitous ink or pencil scribble the card boasts four high quality corners, no surface wear and the central portrait is close to being perfectly centered. A world class card of a baseball legend.
