Description
1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #149 PSA NM-MT 8. The 240-card series of baseball gum cards by Boston-based Goudey Gum was the first major promotion of the 1930's, and the opening salvo of the "bubble gum era" of trading cards that would hold sway for a half century to come. It is now universally recognized as the most significant set of the era, one that set the bar for quality that many feel went unchallenged until the 1952 Topps edition, another landmark first effort. In 1933, baseball cards were an uncommon luxury for young baseball fans in a country still held tightly in the grip of the Great Depression, a factor that limits the modern supply nearly as much as the eight decades that have passed since. Presented is the card that every boy coveted during those challenging times, one of four variations celebrating the man who had launched his apocryphal "Called Shot" a year earlier. The classic batting pose finds the great Bambino set against a red background, a format that recalls the famous Ty Cobb card of the T206 issue.
Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Essentially untouched by the passing of eight decades and change, this relic provides spotless surfaces to go along with barely a suggestion of wear to outer corner tips. We suspect that the slightest nudge in horizontal centering would have been the ticket to a slightly higher rating, an elevation to the top one-half of one percent of all recorded unqualified examples. Corners show the lightest amounts of wear at the tips. Surfaces show only a paltry number of stray magenta ink spatter. The reverse is very clean, the natural print ghosting so common for this issue is at a minimum.
While it may sound a bit absurd to consider the Goudey Ruth to be an underrated entry, we can't help but see room for growth at the upper end of its spectrum. When considering the skyrocketing prices commanded for Mantle cards from the first great bubble gum sets of the post-war era, it's only natural to see Babe Ruth in the first great gum issue ever as a comparable entity.
