Description
Only two superior!
1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #149 PSA NM-MT 8. No man in the history of American sports has single-handedly changed the game as profoundly as this man, who rose from the humblest of beginnings in a Baltimore orphanage to the pinnacle of global fame. Though Ruth was on the downslope of his storied career when this issue appeared on drugstore countertops, he remained the most famous athlete in the country, inspiring the Goudey creators to honor him no fewer than four times in the 240-card set. This particular example echoes some of our favorite Dead Ball Era issues, the bold red background reminiscent of a T206 Cobb and the 1914-15 Cracker Jacks. It's a close-up of the same image used. The effect is particularly powerful in this particular specimen, highly saturated with masterful registration and a virtual absence of any signs of aging.
Corners remain sharp, centering balanced with a jeweler's precision, and the surfaces clean. Just twenty unqualified submissions have ever been showcased beneath a NM-MT 8 header, with the only two superior specimens rising just a half-point higher. A powerful tribute to one of the twentieth century's most influential figures.
