    Description

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. By 1933, Babe Ruth was well-established as the game's all-time greatest, and he enjoyed worldwide fame. The Goudey Gum Company -- the first American manufacturer to issue baseball cards with each stick of gum -- took full advantage of this fact, opportunistically featuring Ruth on no less than four cards in its initial 240-piece effort. The '33 Goudey set is rightfully viewed as a consummate masterpiece, with gorgeous portraiture capturing many of the greatest names of the National Pastime's pre-World War II era. And certainly there were none greater than Babe Ruth, who strikes his classic, full-length batting pose here on what may be the set's most recognizable card. Brilliant color and flawless registration brings the Babe to life more than three-quarters of a century after this collectible's release, and the offered example's truly remarkable freedom from wear defies all logic. An aggregate census of nearly 1,000 pieces (precisely, 999 copies of the #144 Ruth card) has been validated by SGC and PSA; this is one of just three specimens that's achieved a NM/MT+ designation, with a minuscule five cards graded higher.
