    Description

Bested only five times in over one thousand submissions!

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 PSA NM-MT 8. The essence of the Depression-era game, distilled into a single three-inch tall slab of cardboard. The details of the offering are little more than a long list of superlatives, as the set, the player it pictures, and the condition of the card specifically all rank at the pinnacle of the hobby. Joining the 1909-11 T206 and 1952 Topps issues to form the baseball card collecting's "Big Three," the 1933 Goudey set is rightfully considered a consummate masterpiece, with gorgeous portraiture capturing many of the greatest names of the pre-war era. And certainly there was none greater than Babe Ruth, who strikes his classic batting pose here on what may be the set's most recognizable card.

Brilliant color and flawless registration brings the Babe to life over eight decades after issue, and a stunning absence of wear defies all logic. A minor eastern shift in centering and the slightest corner touches are all we can report when pressed to find any variation from utter perfection, and it's little surprise that only four representations have ever risen higher on the PSA population charts.
