1932 Harrison Studio Pittsburgh Crawfords Real Photo Postcard SGC 60 EX 5--Only Example Known! Like the Homestead Grays postcard that likewise appears within this Platinum Night auction, this enormously important relic stands alone within the PSA population, and almost certainly in the hobby at large. It is one of just five known Negro League postcards from the Harrison Studios of Hot Springs, Arkansas, all originally sourced from the same source that is believed to track back to John Herman (Sleepy) Lewis, a veteran catcher for such clubs as the Hilldale Giants and Baltimore Black Sox.

The deeply-segregated south seems a most unlikely geographic derivation for such mailers, particularly considering the fact that every other Negro League trading card that appears in the Standard Catalog is Latin American in origin. It is no hyperbole to consider this postcard, and the Homestead Grays representation, to number among the rarest American baseball cards that exist.

And, like the Grays postcard, the roster featured in razor-sharp period photography on the obverse features several of the greatest figures in Negro League history. Each ballclub was headquartered in the Greater Pittsburgh area, and the mercenary nature of the leagues' barnstorming practitioners results in a fair amount of crossover between the two clubs. This example is particularly noteworthy for the pairing of Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige, the most celebrated offensive and defensive stars in the history of the Negro Leagues.

We provide the roster in full here with Hall of Famers bolded:

Standing: Benny Jones, L.D. Livingston, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Ray Williams, Walter Cannady, Cy Perkins, Oscar Charleston. Kneeling: Sam Streeter, Chester Williams, Harry Williams, Harry Kincannon, Henry Spearman, Jimmie Crutchfield, Bobby Williams, Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe.

We report only typical edge and corner wear to account for its EX 5 assessment. Back is unused.
