Previously Unknown 1913 Derby Cigar Philadelphia Athletics Complete Set (12) - First Examples Ever Found! The Derby Cigar series is an extremely rare edition, with only one or two examples of each player (all hand cut) known to exist. This makes them among the rarest 20th century releases. The issue is so rare that their exact form of distribution, and even their origin, remains unknown. Even the most advanced collections typically fail to include a single example, and just one complete set of individual cards is known to exist. They are paper thin, colorful and nicely produced with rich metallic gold decoration complementing a deep red backdrop and Black and White portraits. Thought to be issued in strips or from a larger premium sized piece, all known examples are hand cut, the dozen subjects all teammates from what was believed to be the 1909 New York Giants. That is, until now!

It took an entire century to be discovered, but Heritage Auctions has the privilege to offer twelve Derby Cigars cards with not a single New York Giant is to be found! These one-of-a-kind rarities showcase players from the Philadelphia Athletics! The cards were found glued into an old magazine, and we now see they were in fact part of a larger canvas. We offer these unique relics in the form of six 2-card panels! Each hand cut panel is approx. 3-3/8" x 2-1/2" and although we struggled with the temptation to remove them from their century old home, we will allow the hobbyist who claims ownership to decide their ultimate fate. Currently, the assumed date of issue was thought to be 1909, and all of the Derby Giants did play on the 1909 squad. They also all played together in 1911, 1912 and 1913. With this discovery we narrow the vintage, as the only years all twelve of these Athletics took the field together was in 1913 and 1914. The only year all twenty-four players played for these two teams was in 1913 when the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the New York Giants four games to one to win the 1913 World Championship! The twelve-man roster includes no fewer than five members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Players now known to the Derby series (listed in pairs as found) are: Eddie Plank/Connie Mack, Chief Bender/Joe Bush, Harry Davis/Eddie Collins, Rube Oldring/Amos Strunk, Jack Barry/Frank Baker, Eddie Murphy/Wally Schang. Each panel does show a crease and some wrinkling and, as mentioned, is at least partially glued to the thin magazine paper backing. The Oldring/Strunk panel has a small portion of the left side torn away but we assume can be professionally restored. This is an unprecedented offering and quite possibly one which will never arise again. Perhaps in another 100 years...

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
