    Description

Extremely Rare 1928 Dockman & Sons "Star Player Candy" SGC-Graded Complete Set (72). NOTE: It has been said you should never say, "never." We have been contacted and have confirmed there is another complete set known.

The want lists of the most advanced collectors will have the name "Star Player Candy." The extremely rare issue appeared at the end of the caramel/candy card era in 1928 and managed to remain so totally unknown for so long they lack reference in the American Card Catalog. Not that having one would have helped Burdick as the cards have a blank back, are void of any advertising, simply offering a sepia-portrait surrounded by a wide border of one of 72 different featured players.

It wasn't until eight decades later that the hobby learned a very familiar name - John H. Dockman & Sons of "E92" fame - produced these cards under different branding in 1928 and 1929. Hobby lore suggests a 73rd card to the '28 edition exists of Lou Gehrig. He is known as part of the 1929 series but as a '28 a card has never been found and the fact that this set, which traces its origin through one family back to the date of issue, we feel we can safely say the set is in fact complete at 72 cards. The roster is packed with stars and HoFers with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb leading the parade. Also featured are Tris Speaker (One of his last cards), Hack Wilson, Pie Traynor, Mickey Cochrane, Lefty Grove (One of his first cards), George Sisler, Eddie Collins (One of his last cards), Ted Lyons (One of his first cards), Frank Frisch, Tony Lazzeri (One of his earlier cards) plus others.
Includes: SGC 60 EX 5: 1 card, J. Sewell; SGC 50 VG/EX 4: 3 cards, Haines, Heilmann and Root; SGC 45 VG+ 3.5: 13 cards, Fothergill, Frisch, Hafey, Heving, Hoyt (Pop One!), Kelly, Lazzeri, Luque, Purdy, Sisler (Pop One!), Stephenson, Thomas, C. Williams; SGC 40 VG 3: 12 cards, Bancroft, Gonzales, Heathcote, Judge, Kamm, Lyons, Meusel, Regan, Ruth, Schang, Shaute, Traynor; SGC 35 Good+ 2.5: 15 cards, Blue, Ganzel, Gehringer (Pop One!), Grimm (Pop One!), McMullen (Pop One!), Moore (Pop One!), Morgan, Myer, Rixey, Rothrock, Ruel, L. Sewell, Speaker, Tavener, K. Williams; SGC 30 Good 2: 13 cards, Barnes, Burns, Cissell, Cobb, Cochrane, Dugan, English, Gerken, Grove, Jamieson, Pennock, Uhle, Wilson; SGC 20 Fair 1.5: 15 cards, Buckeye, Bush, Carroll, Coffman, Collins, Coveleskie, Critz, Cuyler, Dressen, Falk, Flagstead, Gillis, Gray, Hartnett, Vance (Pop One!).

As to the extent of our research, this is the only the second known complete set! Every player, with two exceptions, has a total pop between one and four. Almost half are one of just two noted on the SGC census, seven (noted above) are the only entries! Ganzel is the most "common" with six. These cards are gorgeous. The technical grades vigorously contradict the visual as many cards present at the EX/MT to NM levels. To piece this set together is a task that could literally take a lifetime.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
