1991 Topps Baseball Uncut Sheet "Operation Desert Shield" Variant. In 1991 Topps was celebrating the 40th Anniversary of their first card promotions from 1951. The war in Korea was replaced by a war in Iraq with our brave sons and daughters in the military called upon to free a small country from oppressive rule. The freedom effort was based out of Saudi Arabia and was dubbed "Operation Desert Shield." As a show of support, Topps produced "Desert Shield" cards that were a parallel to the 1991 standard issue but display a special gold-foil "Desert Shield" emblem identifying them as one of a reported production of less than 7,000 of each card intended for the soldiers serving overseas. The cards circulated in single card packs and were prized by military personnel but didn't seem to have made it to their intended overseas audience. No complete sets were ever issued by Topps. Offered is a full, uncut 132-card sheet from this scarce production variation. Stars of the era included are Griffey Sr., Fielder AS, Davis, Henderson AS, LaRussa, Gonzalez, Ryan RB, Bonds AS, Ripken RB, Thomas, Sosa, Justice, Bo Jackson, Bonds, Fisk AS, Griffey Jr AS, Canseco, R. Johnson, Yount, Chipper Jones, Chamberlain and all six checklists. The sheet is rolled and resents very nicely with any creasing, wrinkles limited to the outer perimeter - not on the cards. Water staining affects the majority of the five columns of cards on the right. Great for wall display and a terrific conversation piece.
