1928 Harrington's Ice Cream Baseball Partial Set (31/60). In the late-1920's the fashionable card format of the day was a 1-3/8" x 2-1/2" thin card with a gritty one-color image. These sets were light on design but abundant with the greatest names of the era. A number of food related sets were produced in this manner by candy, ice cream, and some anonymous sources. The ice cream sets offered to exchange a set of cards for a sizeable quantity of ice cream. With Harrington's, youngsters could exchange a Ruth card for an ice cream novelty or a complete set of 60 cards for one gallon of ice cream. Naturally, the company didn't want to give away too many gallons of product. As with other exchange offers, a control card was held back. We are offering elsewhere in this auction what we believe is the card that served that purpose, #48 Earl Smith. Consigned to us from the original owner, this offering is the largest supply of Harrington's Ice Cream cards (to the best of our research) ever presented at public auction. Also offered elsewhere are the "key" Ruth and Cobb cards from this elusive set. Every card has been graded by SGC. Includes: Graded - SGC 86 NM+ 7.5: 1 card, #46 Terry; SGC 80 EX/NM 6: 5 cards w/#'s 11 Uhle, 17 Mays, 29 Lazzeri, 40 Kamm and 55 Rommel; SGC 70 EX+ 5.5: 2 cards w/#'s 20 Kelly and 54 Sisler; SGC 60 EX 5: 1 card, #3 Dugan; SGC 50 VG/EX 4: 7 cards w/#'s 4 Faber, 31 Smith, 37 Sheely, 42 McGraw, 49 Goslin, 51 Harris and 60 McInnis; SGC 40 VG 3: 6 cards w/#'s 7 Meusel, 32 Carey, 45 P.
