1911 E94 George Close and Co. Candy Complete Overprint Set (10). The E94 George Close Candy card set is one of the more intriguing vintage baseball card sets. Your first impression is that it appears to be a basic thirty card set, issued in 1911 with a Hall of Fame-packed roster. The set remains one of the more difficult early Caramel and Gum promotions to complete. It gets interesting in that each player can be found with seven different color backgrounds. Orange is by far the rarest, and was unknown for well over half a century. An Orange Sam Crawford is offered elsewhere in this auction. Elevating rarity to a whole new level is the very, very small sampling of cards that display advertising for different George Close products. We estimate these treasured variants appear on less than one percent of E94s. These overprints have been known about and cataloged for decades and, amazingly enough, were, according to hobby veterans, simply found in stacks of "E" cards with no premium value. Times have changed. Currently there are ten different ads known.

We are aware of just one other collector who has amassed just over half of the run. Most of this group are the plate samples in The Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, by Lew Lipset. Each has been graded by SGC. Includes: Bates/Gold "Blome's Chocolates" (SGC 20 Fair 1.5), Byrne/Violet "Close's Candies are Pennant Winners" (SGC 30 Good 2), Cicotte/Green "Close's Oppie Dildock, The Best of Candy Suckers" (SGC 30 Good 2), Cicotte/Green "Your Out! If you don't eat Close's Oppie Dildocks" (SGC 40 VG 3), Doolan/Gold "Oh You Fan! Eat Closes's Candies" (SGC 40 VG 3), Grant/Green "Your Safe! If you eat Close's Chocolates" (SGC 10 Poor 1), Kleinow/Gold "Your Safe! Have a Cuckoo!" (SGC 30 Good 2), Lake/Olive "Three Strikes! Get a Lemon 2 For 1c." (SGC 30 Good 2), Speaker/Olive "Home Run! For Close's Butter Balls, 4 For 1c." (SGC 10 Poor 1) and Turner/Olive "A Base Hit! Close's Sponge Cake" (SGC 50 VG/EX 4). Most collectors become discouraged trying to find just one and are more than pleased regardless which one they can obtain. Finding a complete set of all ten certainly ranks as an almost impossible task.
