Description

1909-13 M101-2 "Sporting News" Supplements Near Set (99/100). From the John Esch Collection. This set of premiums, issued by The Sporting News from 1909 to 1913, features attractive sepia-toned photos which measure 8" x 10." The complete set numbers one-hundred, of which ninety-nine are present, and depicts many of the greatest stars of the day, including Jackson, Lajoie, and Mathewson. Several team photos were included, as well as some images of players with rivals or teammates, such as Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb at the 1909 World Series, or Walter Johnson and his catcher, Charles "Gabby" Street. Managers, executives, and numerous Hall of Famers are present in this remarkable collection. The series was printed on delicate paper which tends to become brittle;. Many of the examples here do exhibit creasing, pieces lost, and tape repairs. This is a scarce 99-piece near set, only missing Fred Clarke. This grouping is a true time capsule of baseball of the era of Cy Young and Tris Speaker, known as the Deadball Years.
