The birth of the Bubble Gum Age!1933 Goudey Baseball Uncut Sheet of Twenty-Four Cards Including Babe Ruth #181. The 240-card series of baseball gum cards by Boston-based Goudey Gum was the first major promotion of the 1930's, and the opening salvo of the "bubble gum era" of trading cards that would hold sway for a half century to come. It is now universally recognized as the most significant set of the era, one that set the bar for quality that many feel went unchallenged until the 1952 Topps edition, another landmark first effort.
The 1933 Goudey was an uncommon luxury for young baseball fans in a country still held tightly in the grip of the Great Depression, and one wonders what obstacle course of investor objections must have been overcome to innovate such a daring new project in the historical context. We're certainly couldn't be happier that valor overcame discretion in this instance, as the issue is one of the great beauties of the hobby, standing beside the T206 and 1952 Topps issues as the hobby's "Big Three."
Presented is one of the most unlikely survivors from the 1933 production run, a sheet spared dissection at the cutting table. Twenty-four cards remain forever linked, providing the kind of display possibilities that single cards simply cannot muster. While an expected degree of wear exists at the edges, most significantly at left where the residue of ancient cellophane tape has browned with age, the sheet is spared the creasing and tearing common among its few fellow exemplars.
The key attraction of this specimen is the Babe Ruth #181 card in the center quadrant, this placement defending it from the edge wear to an effectively Mint appearance. While we would strongly advise against any impulse to cut this sheet today, it does bear mentioning that our last offering of this card in Mint 9 condition drew a winning bid of $456,000.

Signature®: Heritage Live!® Floor Sessions
Auctions designated as "Heritage Live" have continuous bidding from the time the auction is posted on our site through the live event. When normal Internet bidding ends ten minutes before the floor session for each lot, you can visit HA.com/Live and continue to place Live Proxy bids. Your secret maximum bids placed prior to the live event will compete against the live bids. When the item hits the auction block, you can continue to bid live through HA.com/Live against the floor and other live bidders with streaming audio and video of the auction. You also have the option to bid live by phone. Call (800) 872-6467 Ext. 1150 and ask for phone bidding assistance at least 24 hours prior to the live auction.
Signature® Sessions With Extended Bidding These sessions are presented only online and bidding is only taken through our website. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30.
Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding.
