Description1915 Cracker Jack Baseball Cards Advertising Sign. For the average fan, it's the song that serves as the unbreakable bond between the sticky confection and our national pastime, but for most of the collectors reading this catalog, the bold red trading cards issued by Cracker Jack remain the primary baseball association. Over a century later, the pair of sets released by Cracker Jack during the waning years of the Dead Ball Era remain among the most recognizable and coveted in the entirety of the Standard Catalog, providing that glorious amalgam of unmistakable aesthetics and iconic figures that fuels the flames of collecting lust.
Several of our more significant single-card offerings from the 1914 and 1915 Cracker Jack issues have flipped the sixth digit on the pricing odometer in recent years, but none of those elite specimens could match the offered relic for rarity. This is, in fact, one of only two known examples of this collecting grail, unearthed only a year ago and presented for the first time here in masterfully restored condition.
While the effects of a century of storage in a Midwestern barn are apparent in the general surface soiling and minor chipping along the top edge, now expertly repaired to account for perhaps three percent of total surface area, the spectacular graphics shine through unabated. The designer of the piece chose his subjects wisely, with seven of the eleven players pictured now immortalized in Cooperstown bronze: Cobb, Baker, Speaker, Wagner, Tinker, Evers, and Maranville. The most significant entry in the Cracker Jack set, the banished "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, appears as well.
Lengthy text on reverse provides thrilling insight into the promotion and release of the cards, teasing us with the knowledge that a full set of 176 cards could have been had for a mere quarter mailed to the factory headquarters. The heavy card stock sign measures 11x14.5" in size and is framed to museum quality between two panes of glass to allow full visibility of obverse and verso. A truly exhilarating offering for the most advanced candy card collector.
