1888 A17 Allen & Ginter's "World's Champions - Second Series" Album. John Esch Collection. By 1888, the tobacco industry had taken full notice of the marketing potential of sports cards (and non-sports cards) that were inserted in their packs of cigarettes. Soon, premium items, such as elaborately lithographed albums based on the card series, were available in exchange for coupons, also inserted in the packs. This album was issued in conjunction with tobacco company Allen & Ginter's second series of sports cards, designated N29, that featured fifty sportsmen of the day, including six baseball players. Hall of Famer Buck Ewing is represented; other players are James Fogarty, Charles Getzein, George Miller, John Morrell, and James Ryan. This example presents excellent with an intact string binding. The colors are vibrant and the paper shows very little evidence of aging.
