    C. 1880 Christo Von Buffalo Baseball Cartoon Commentary Cabinet Cards Pair (2). Christopher Smith is not a house hold name but he is noted for his work regarding the Buffalo Baseball team in 1877. His birth name was Christoff Schmidt. His professional name was Christo Von Buffalo, signed his works "Christo." His works chronicled a squad that was a first for Buffalo baseball fans. There are all together 34 known works of art from that season, all spell out in graphic commentary events of a team that finished 10-27-3 despite having future stars like Larry Corcoran, Andy Cummings John Montgomery Ward and James Roseman on the roster. Despite numerous promotions like discounts for women and sold score cards with ads for local businesses. Originally hired to keep score Christopher Smith used his artistic talents to covey the season via cartoons much like political cartoons where they went on window display at a downtown Buffalo clothing store called Joseph Garson's. To help spread the word, there were traditional cabinet cards made of his works of which we have two in this presentation. One regards an Aug., 20th game titled "To Beat or Not To Beat, That is the QUESTion" and A Sept. 20th game "One at Last." The second refers an Aug, 16 game titled "Straight Pitching" with Galvin tossing Native American Tecumseh and "Total Eclipse" which is about a July 18 loss to the stars. Both provide fascinating glimpses into history about a one-year team that had no official league designation. It seems the end of the team also meant the end to Christo who can be considered baseball's first cartoon satirist, a tradition that continued well into the 20th Century. Both have been encapsulated (SGC Authentic) for protection but both are in excellent condition.
