Since 1988, he's been "Hawkeye" to the loyal listeners of NEW Country 96.3 KSCS, which makes Mark Rybczyk the longest-running on-air FM radio personality in Dallas-Fort Worth. That's impressive enough. But he's got the awards and accolades to accompany the longevity, among them Personality of the Year statues from the Country Music Association and Billboard. And he's in two Halls of Fames for Texas Radio and Country Radio. The man is radio at this point.
Mark is also a passionate card collector whose love affair with the hobby began in 1971 when his family moved to a neighborhood reminiscent of the one in the movie The Sandlot. He and his friends played baseball every day. They also collected cards, and good timing too, as Topps sprawling 752-card set from 1971 Topps is hard to find in good condition these days. When he was a boy, Mark liked all the incredible action photos of his favorite players.
Mark continued collecting through the 1970s and 80s, amassing thousands of cardboard keepsakes. He held on to that collection as he moved through life, often revisiting it to evoke that sense of nostalgia collectors know well.
Now, the radio icon wants his collection to serve a greater purpose, so he recently approached Heritage about auctioning his assemblage, including his 1971 collection and several boxes of sealed wax among those beloved memories. Proceeds from the sale of his collection will benefit Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, a cause dear to the DFW icon and his colleagues, including co-hosts Michelle Rodriguez and the late, legendary Terry Dorsey, who started a yearly radiothon on KSCS that has raised more than $4,000,000 for the children's hospital.
"For the past two decades, I have become very involved with Cook Children's Medical Center: I served as a counselor and on the board of directors of Camp Sanguinity, their summer camp for kids with cancer," Mark says. "I am excited that a childhood passion of mine will now be auctioned to benefit the children of North Texas
