    Description

Important "Spalding's Australian Base Ball Tour" Cap Anson Cabinet Photo. In 1888-1889 Cap Anson was one of if not the star attraction on Albert Spalding's world tour to promote our National Pastime, and Spalding Sporting Goods of course, to other parts of the world. The tour included the Chicago team and a select group of marquee names. Working their way out west and beyond, the tour stopped in Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Egypt, France, and England. Anson's social influence, for worse by all accounts, was felt into the middle of the 20th Century until the color line of Major League baseball was crossed. The persona aside, Anson played a record 27 straight seasons and would be the first to achieve the 3,000 hit plateau by which all future hitters would be judged. The regal image of Anson shows sharp details and good contrast. Surface spotting hardly influences the viewer from being totally mesmerized by the commanding gaze of one of the first major baseball superstars of the 19th Century. This very rare cabinet photo of Adrian "Cap" Anson was issued to commemorate the grand world tour event. The card mount clearly reads in gold metallic ink, "Spalding's Australian Base Ball Tour, 1888-89." In vintage ink is noted "Anson" on the front, as if there was any doubt who is portrayed in the photo. Staining appears along the top and bottom edges of both sides but more apparent on the reverse. As best we can determine the Authentic assessment is due to the unnaturally clipped bottom two corners. This significant relic of baseball's past offers tremendous significance to not only the game but to history itself. A rare and possibly unique cabinet photo of a pioneer of the game.
