Circa 1860's French & Sawyer CDV with Early Baseball Game Scene. NOTE: We neglected to mention this pieces is pictured in Ken Burns' book, "Baseball" and appears on the DVD.

Born into humble beginnings and spread by the marching armies of the Civil War, the sport of baseball comes by its nickname of our "National Pastime" honestly. There is something undeniably American about the way it can crown unlikely heroes even as the truth of genuine greatness is only borne out by consistency. The sport has always marched in tandem with the fortunes of the country at large, and sometimes led the way with a voice too powerful to ignore.

This exciting relic finds the game in its infancy, one of the very earliest publicly marketed images of the sport. The CDV is a product of noted photographers French & Sawyer of Keene, N.H., believed to date to the late 1860's. It captures an early baseball scene played adjacent to a country school. The print and card-mount are very nice considering its age. There are but a few spot stains and surface imperfections. The lone area of loss is a small spot in the upper right of the print in the sky that barely impacts visual appeal. Image quality is very fine. The card is encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC, who both assign our listed vintage and assure that the ancient keepsake is original and unaltered.
