    Description

    C. 1920 "Babe Ruth, Carl Mays Stars" Babe Ruth, Unique Throwing Pose, Barnstorming Ad Card SGC Authentic. Offered is an amazing real photo barnstorming advertising card for the "Babe Ruth, Carl Mays Stars" from the early 1920's. Barnstorming tours that featured Major League players were very popular with fans, and these teams played many games against African-American teams. Barnstorming tours were a prime chance for players to earn extra money in the off-season. Negro League teams often enjoyed success against the all-white teams despite being considered inferior. As early as 1920, Babe Ruth and Carl Mays signed up to play games along the east coast forming the "Babe Ruth, Carl Mays Stars." This caught the attention and ire of Commissioner Landis, who sought to put a stop to the concept. It's believed Ruth was paid more money to do this tour and another in Cuba with John McGraw than the was paid from the Yankees. It became such an issue Landis even suspended Babe Ruth for the beginning of the 1922 season.

Promotional pieces from this tour are nothing short of extremely rare. Currently, there are two different cards from this series. Both feature Babe Ruth--one is your typical batting pose and then there is this stunning throwing portrait that is found on no other Ruth collectible. The approx. 3-1/4 x 5-1/2" card clearly reads "Special Tour - Babe Ruth, Carl Mays Stars" plus the name and address of tour promoter - SS, Lynch, Savage Enterprises - 370 East 149th St., N. Y. City". Cards featuring Babe Ruth from the early years with the Yankees are the most coveted and this card is one impressive display. Just a few are real photos. The SGC Authentic assessment is due to a light amount of color added to the upper left and top edge in brief segments. There are three small areas of edge/surface chipping and four spots of surface wear on the reverse from being glued in an album. Corners show some wear but there is no creasing and visual appeal is exceptional thanks to the photo that boasts a full range of values and sharp, crisp details.
