    C. 1910 "Hans Wagner" Oval Cigar Label SGC 50 VG/EX 4. Without a doubt the most famous story in the hobby is how Honus Wagner objected to having his face on a card that would circulate inside packs of cigarettes where children may be enticed to buy them and thus become smokers. As the cigar was appealing to a much more mature audience, it is possible a compromise was presented where his likeness would only be used on the label inside cigar boxes. Today, there are only an extremely small number of these labels known and it seems the idea didn't pass muster with Wagner. It appears these labels never made it past the proposal stage and witnessed no public circulation. Thankfully a few did survive as they are incredible works of art. We salute the lithographer who's skill has graced future generations. The portrait is a familiar one... it is "the" portrait. Offered is one of quite possibly only two or three known of the 3-1/4" x 4-1/4" oval labels bearing the likeness of the Dutchmen. He is surrounded by a baseball scene, all finished off with a regal gold metallic frame. There is one slight edge "ding" but no creasing or wrinkles. Presentation value is near-mint and some, like us, may feel the SGC 50 VG/EX 4 assessment is conservative. Regardless, it is many, many times more rare than the T206 Wagner and a fantastic addition to any vintage card or T206 specific collection.
