C. 1891 Conly Studios Dan Brouthers Cabinet Photo. Dan Brouthers was one of the greatest stars of 19th century baseball. His career spanned from 1879 to 1896 and two games in 1904 for no less than ten different teams in the National League, American Association and Players League. He excelled regardless of the team his jersey read. "Big Dan" was a consistent batter who batted between .307 and .374 for 15 years winning five batting titles. He was a one man batting crew in the 1880's where he averaged a robust .347 on almost 1,500 hits over the ten-year period. Offered is a rare cabinet card produced by Conly Studio of Boston, Mass. The back of the 6-3/8" x 4-1/4" mount shows the elegant Conly log and advertising. "Brouthers" is written in very light pencil at the top. Two pieces of tape are at top/bottom center as is a lone small area of loss at the top edge. The image area has anticipated toning, the portrait remains remarkably sharp with total range of values and fine details in the moustache, clothes and eyes. Others subjects known link them to the 1891 Boston Red Stockings - the final champions of the American Association. This is only the second example we are aware of that has survived the last 125+ years. An unquestionable rarity of a historic baseball player and player union representative.
