    Next stop, Cooperstown...

1993 SP Derek Jeter #279 SGC 98 Gem 10 - Population One, None Higher! The Rookie of the Year in 1996. Five World Championship rings. A home run for his 3,000th hit during a five-for-five performance. A walk-off single in his final Yankee Stadium game. A roster of ex-girlfriends that would make Frank Sinatra jealous. Everything just seems to fall into place when your name is Derek Jeter, and if past is indeed prologue we may well see the first unanimous ballot when Cooperstown comes calling in 2020. Does anything ever not go The Captain's way?

Well, card collectors might think so. While the crowded field of trading card companies in the modern game has supplied the hobby with several entries considered to be a Derek Jeter rookie, top billing is all but universally assigned to the 1993 SP. Of course, it had to be the most condition sensitive one as well.

It's that unusual foil coating that supplies the issue with both its pretty face and its Achilles heel, leaving the edges so damage-prone that the slightest brush of the finger sends the grade plummeting to the middle reaches of the population report. Out of almost 2,200 submitted to SGC, only one as been assessed at the 98 Gem 10 level. A Gem 10 grade for a '52 Mantle is three times as common as a Gem 10 grade for a Jeter rookie!

We expect the sharp ascent of the Jeter market to continue until Induction Day at a minimum, and with game used gear already shattering the six-figure barrier, we may be looking at the modern equivalent of the T206 Wagner here, at least when taking the "condition rarity" factor into account. While no investment is a 100% guarantee, most would agree that, with the game on the line, it's The Captain we'd want to see stepping to the plate.
