1990 Topps USA George Bush #USA1 PSA Mint 9 - Pop One of One! The Finest Example on Record. One of the ultimate rarities among modern baseball cards, the 1990 Topps #USA1 card depicting President George H. W. Bush as a Yale first baseman also has one of the more fascinating back stories. Utilizing the same design as the 1990 Topps Baseball set, the special commemorative card was originally printed and given to the President by Topps Chairman Art Shorin. A full binder was given to the President, with Shorin keeping one card to have signed for his own collection. Here is where the story gets fuzzy. Topps officials state 100 of the cards were created, which would mean ninety nine were given to President Bush in that December 1989 meeting. However, there are typically 132 cards per sheet on any Topps product, making it more likely that a full 132 were made. Even if Topps' math was wrong, it didn't take into account the fact that an Illinois collector claimed to have pulled one of the cards from a 1990 Topps Baseball pack, as reported by People magazine. Now, it appears that there are two distinct versions of the card, with no one knowing the full story of where the second version originated. After viewing a sampling of these cards submitted by White House Chief of Staff John Sununu, PSA determined that the cards given directly to the President include a glossy coating not found on the other cards. It is purported that the non-glossy cards may have been sold onto the market by a former Topps employee, and as many as seventy were released. While the true story of the origins of these cards may never be known, it remains true that the card (in either version) is one of the ultimate rarities in modern cards, and remains atop even the most advanced collector's want list.

The particular example offered here is not just one of the rare cards... it is the single highest graded example of either version. Graded PSA Mint 9, the card is only held back from a Gem Mint by a few scattered print marks and a very slight centering miscue from left to right. With most copies of the card grading in the PSA 6 to PSA 8 range, this is the only confirmed Mint 9 and therefore the cream of the crop for the high-end collector.
