    Description

1968 Topps Test 3-D Roberto Clemente SGC 96 Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher. The same year that Tom Wolfe shook up the literary world with his famous volume, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," documenting Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Prankster's adventures with LSD and other psychedelics, the good folks at Topps were engaged in a far less controversial approach in expanding the visual boundaries of its clientele. The offered relic represents a quantum leap forward in the field, providing a thoroughly "trippy" three-dimensional component through the burgeoning field of lenticular imagery.

The blank reverse bears none of the printed text seen on other like examples. Approximately one hundred of these proof cards--including several Clementes--entered the hobby in 1999, sold to a dealer by a member of the original production team. This Mint example of the set's key entry was, of course, the most significant component thereof.

Graded SGC 96 Mint 9. One of just two graded Mint from a total population of just eighteen. Heritage set a new world record just a year ago when a Mint 9 example of Clemente's 1955 Topps rookie commanded a winning bid of $478,000, one of eleven assessed at that elite grade. The offered memento of the tragic Hall of Famer is of just two SGC Mint entries, and considered by many to be the most important and desirable trading card of its decade.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
