    Description

1963 Topps Pete Rose - 1963 Rookie Stars #537 PSA Mint 9. Charlie had only just begun to Hustle when this card introduced him to baseball fans during a freshman season punctuated by 170 hits, on his way to baseball history. "Somebody's gotta win and somebody's gotta lose," Rose once told reporters. "I believe in letting the other guy lose." Like the man whose seemingly untouchable record he bested in 1985, Pete Rose was a man whose single-minded determination made him one of the most successful players in the history of the sport, and one of the most feared. Of the dozens of HoFers who made their Topps debut in the 1960's, only the rookie card of one of baseball's greatest pitchers - Nolan Ryan - can approach the historical significance card #537 from the 1963 edition enjoys and has earned. Though the disembodied head design may not win any awards from any judging panel, the magnificent condition of the offered specimen most assuredly will. We guess it is only fair to mention the card is also the rookie card for Pedro Gonzalez, Ken McMullen and Al Weis who collectively didn't amass half the number of hits than did Pete Rose.

Graded PSA Mint 9, this card is one of twenty-seven graded 'Mint 9" with one single copy rating higher. All this from a total population of almost 3,100 submissions. The full-bleed blue header is merciless when it comes to wear, and a stiff breeze can knock a Rose rookie off the mark in a heartbeat. This attention grabber is practically void of the typical white spots at the edges and corners of the blue field. The four corners encompass marvelous centering and registration. Centering is barely a millimeter away from perfection. The obverse is glossy, inks remain as fresh today as they were when this card rolled off the presses over 50 years ago. When paired with the tremendous historical relevance attached to a card that heralded the arrival of the eventual Hit King, the appeal is as clear as can be.
