    Description

1959 Topps Bob Gibson #514 PSA Mint 9. His 1.12 earned run average in during the St. Louis Cardinals' National League Championship season of 1968 stands as the lowest in nearly a century of the Live Ball Era, a campaign of dominance so one-sided that Major League Baseball shaved five inches off the top of all pitcher's mounds to give hitters a chance. With blazing speed and fierce competitiveness, Gibson inspired both frustration and fear in opposing hitters, sending batters foolish enough to crowd the plate off to first base nursing a healthy bruise.

It all began here when Gibson was called up to the Bigs after just one spectacular season with the Rochester Red Wings of the Cardinals farm system. He'd make his first appearance in relief in the fifth game of the 1959 season, opposite another Hall of Fame headhunter by the name of Don Drysdale. His first few seasons were uneven affairs, but he'd become an All-Star Game regular in 1965, going on to earn two Cy Young Awards and a National League MVP before his 1975 retirement and subsequent first-ballot Hall of Fame induction.

Graded PSA Mint 9. Only twenty-eight, almost exactly one percent of submissions to PSA, have claimed a Mint 9 rating, with just three grading higher. Color, registration, centering and condition are all essentially flawless, a fitting tribute to perhaps the most gifted pitcher in the history of the sport.
