    Description

1959 Topps Bob Gibson #514 PSA Mint 9. This showpiece collectible pays tribute to the debut of Cardinals hurler Bob Gibson, an event from which Major League hitters wouldn't completely recover for more than fifteen years. The future Hall of Famer is wearing a deceptively benign smile in his '59 Topps "High Number" depiction, or perhaps the cheerful expression shows gleeful relish as he looks forward to the one-sided pitcher-vs-batter triumphs that would soon follow. (Gibson would become so dominant, in fact, that the sport felt compelled to alter the height of the pitcher's mound, with the sole motive of attempting to defuse even a small portion of his talent-based advantage.)

Just three copies in the world - among more than 1,750 PSA-graded specimens - have managed to achieve a higher tier. Frankly, it's surprising that any have done so. Not a single one of the fibers comprising this amazing piece deviates from its as-manufactured state, and the item seems to possess all the attributes associated with a Mint-condition card: dead-on centering, snow-white cardstock and - especially noteworthy in this entry - a beautifully focused image. The most intense scrutiny yields no meaningful discrepancies (unless one can seriously count, say, a couple of flyspeck-sized skips in the black-inked number block's print). A phenomenal Gibson rookie!
