    Description

1958 Topps Mickey Mantle #150 PSA NM-MT 8. "It's what you're worth," said New York Yankee general manager George Weiss when he offered Mickey Mantle a $17,000 cut on his salary for the 1958 season. Mantle was at the height of his ability. In 1956, he led the Yankees to another World Championship by batting .353, and winning the AL Triple Crown and MVP. In '57, Mantle hit even higher, at .365, and again won the AL MVP, but managed "only" 37 homers and 94 RBI, totals less than in 1956. In 1958, the other two iconic New York center fielders, Willie Mays and Duke Snider, had gone with their respective teams to California, and the Yankees were the only team in town. Mickey was on his way to becoming the home run king of switch-hitters with 536. In '61, he threatened Ruth's single season record of 60. Long-time Yankee manager Casey Stengel had to preside over a fading Joe DiMaggio, but in 1952 Mantle took over center field, and as Stengel had earlier said, "He has more speed than any slugger I've ever seen, and more slug than any other speedster.... It's very confusing." Actually, "The Ole Professor" understood greatness.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. The front features a mid-career Mantle in a portrait shot with a bright yellow background. The 1958 Topps series included 494 standard sized cards. Distinguishing the set were the bright, solid backgrounds. The Mantle card's horizontal back shows some brief personal info, a short bio, and season and career statistics. There are even two small cartoon panels with Mantle's image wearing a king's crown for his hitting exploits.
