1957 Topps Frank Robinson #35 Rookie PSA Mint 9. Few Major League debuts have been as auspicious as Frank Robinson's, who ran away with Rookie of the Year honors in 1956 on the power of a National League-leading 122 runs scored, thirty-eight of them by way of long ball, a record tally for first season sluggers. So when the Topps company debuted its first photographic release in 1957, the number thirty-five card of the set was a key target, particularly among those few collectors of African-American heritage.

While another Robinson had been the first to cross the unjust racial barrier that had existed in Major League Baseball until 1947, Frank's contribution to the advancement of the sport is difficult to overstate. Soon after the superstar slugger claimed the American League Triple Crown and a Baltimore Orioles World Championship ring in 1966, Frank Robinson became one of the game's most outspoken voices for civil rights, a brave and principled stand that helped pave his path to installment as the Major Leagues' first black manager.

Having placed the cover star in his proper context, we move now to an assessment of the trading card itself, an elite representation equaled twenty-one times in the history of the PSA population chart, but never surpassed. Like Mantle and the 1952 Topps issue, Robinson's debut within one of that company's most celebrated sets only enhances the massive appeal earned by the man alone. Color and registration are first rate, and no signs of handling wear are evident. Only upon the closest of inspection can we find the slightest hint of a diamond cut, possibly the only fault that bars entry to a Gem Mint 10 holder.
