    None superior!

1957 Topps Don Drysdale Rookie #18 PSA Mint 9. Those wholesome "happy days" of the 1950's weren't all "Leave it to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best," despite what late night classic television re-runs might have you believe. John Wayne ruled the silver screen with murderous detachment, and Rocky Marciano turned every Heavyweight title defense into a bloody battle of attrition. In Major League Baseball, it was a six-foot five right hander out in Los Angeles who served as the standard bearer for no-nonsense masculinity, a lawman who doled out justice with searing horsehide. "If they knocked two of your guys down, I'd get four," he explained. You have to protect your hitters."

He'd plunk only ten in total during his two seasons in Brooklyn before leading the National League for four consecutive seasons in that statistic upon the team's western relocation. Drysdale doesn't appear in the 1956 Topps set so this is his official rookie, and a stunning beauty of an example. In fact, it's quite literally as good as it gets, as only seventeen of nearly 4,000 submissions to PSA have garnered a Mint 9 assessment, and none a Gem Mint 10.

We should also note that the 1957 Topps issue that introduced the Hall of Fame hurler to the trading card marketplace is itself highly noteworthy in its own right as the fabled company's first flirtation with photographic images after an unbroken fidelity to painted portraits in its early years. The card is clean as as a whistle, with sharp registration, fine centering and razor-sharp corners.
