1956 Topps Roberto Clemente (Gray Back) #33 PSA Mint 9 - Only One Higher. The great Roberto Clemente was the best Rule 5 Draft selection from the minor leagues in history. How were the Pittsburgh Pirates able to draft Roberto Clemente from the Brooklyn Dodgers' Montreal Royals farm club in the Rule 5 Draft in November of 1954? Were the Dodgers foolish to not recognize all the obvious talent in Clemente, or did the Dodgers, with numerous African-American players, not want to overload their roster with black players and alienate prejudiced fans. The Dodgers and their fans had an admirable history of racial tolerance, but was an unwritten quota in the background? In any event, Pittsburgh's Branch Rickey knew talent when he saw it, and he snapped up Clemente.

The rest is history. Clemente broke made his MLB in 1955 with a .255 average and upped that to .311 in 1956. The Pirates took the 1960 World Series in seven games over the New York Yankees as Roberto hit. 310 in the Classic. Then Clemente was the 1973 World Series MVP, hitting .414, as the Pirates beat the Baltimore. He won four batting championships, was a 13-time All-Star, and added 12 Gold Gloves for his outfield play. Hitting .317 lifetime, Clemente reached exactly 3,000 hits and then tragically died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve in 1972 when he was on a rescue mission to Nicaragua. In a special election, Clemente was selected to the Hall of Fame in 1973, the first Puerto Rican and the first Caribbean in the Hall. This card has high visual appeal with a Clemente head shot, plus an action photo of the Gold Glover making a leaping catch. It's Clemente and it's graded PSA Mint 9. One of only eight confirmed with a Grey back in MINT condition with just one higher.
