1956 Topps Mickey Mantle (Gray Back) #135 PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. The man. Mickey Mantle first played for the New York Yankees as a 19-year-old in 1951 and was promising. In ensuing years, he quickly kept improving, and by 1955 the young center fielder was now outstanding, hitting .306, clubbing 37 homers and knocking in 99 runs. And then came 1956 - "The Season" - when Mantle put that merely outstanding 1955 campaign in the rearview mirror, and the Commerce Comet rocketed into the stratosphere to burst into a supernova superstar. What a season! The Triple Crown. American League MVP. Major League Player of the Year. Mantle took the batting title by hitting .353, and led the league with 52 homers and 130 RBI. He then helped the Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series. Mantle went on to win the AL MVP two more times and lead the Yankees to twelve pennants and seven World Series championships. He finished with 536 lifetime homers, along the way challenging Babe Ruth's then record of 61 in several seasons, especially 1961. But when all was said and done, the very apex of his Hall-of-Fame career was 1956.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. The card. The jewel of the 1956 Topps set remains the Mickey Mantle #135. Absolutely wondrous visual appeal. The card just bursts. Start with Mickey's infectious, wide, joyous, youthful grin. Add in the bold circus colors of the primary hues, with Mantle's blue hat and the card's heading in vivid red and yellow. This very sought-after Mantle card should only continue to soar in value. A 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle (Gray Back) #135 MT 9, a half grade higher, sold at auction in September 2020 for $43,200.
