1956 Topps Hank Aaron (White Back) #31 SGC Mint 9 - Pop One, One Higher. On April 8, 1974, now playing for the Atlanta Braves, Aaron homered over the left-center field fence to break Babe Ruth's all-time record with his 715th home run. Aaron wound up with 755 career home runs. Because of the "Steroid Era," many still consider him the true home run champ. Hank was a key member of the 1957 Milwaukee Braves World Series champs. The HoF outfielder was a 21-time All-Star, won three Gold Gloves, never hit 50 home runs in a season, but led the NL in homers four times. "I looked for the same pitch my whole career, a breaking ball," said Hank Aaron. "I never worried about the fastball. They couldn't throw it past me. None of them." Aaron credits his years of batting cross-handed for the powerful wrists that enabled him to get around so quickly on a fastball and drive it so far. As a youth, he couldn't afford a bat, so he practiced by hitting bottle caps with a broom handle or a stick. He played with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League, where he continued to hit cross-handed, but when he signed with the then Boston Braves organization, he changed to an orthodox grip. In 1954, he made the Majors with the Milwaukee Braves. In 1956, he won the first of his two batting titles, hitting .328.

When Topps bought out card war rival Bowman after the 1955 season, it meant that instead of exclusive contracts limiting a player to Topps or Bowman, that Topps had the players all to itself. Thus, Topps released a large 340-card set in 1956. The first 180 cards in the issue had either gray or white backs, the remaining cards were only in gray. Topps also continued an innovation begun in 1954 - dual photos on the cards. Graded SGC Mint 9. The only card graded MINT with one higher.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
