1955 Topps Ernie Banks ##28 PSA Mint 9 - None Higher. If a baseball collector could go back in time for a so-called ordinary day that is extraordinary in retrospect, what could be better than a sunny game at still-lightless Wrigley Field during the 1950s with Ernie Banks and the Cubs? In looking at this colorfully appealing card, one can almost hear "Mr. Cub" reciting his classic call to enthusiasm of, "Let's play two." Banks first played professionally with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League. He signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1953 and went straight to the Majors, becoming the Cubs' first African-American player. He was a shortstop with power - quite unusual in that time. 1955 was Banks' break-out season, as he hit 44 homers and drove in 117 while hitting .295. Banks was the NL MVP in both '58 and '59. He was the first Cub to win a Gold Glove, in 1960. In 1961, after a knee injury, Banks transitioned to first base - his position for the rest of his career. Ernie played 19 seasons, all with the Cubs. The Hall of Famer was a 14-time All-Star and led the National League in homers (2-times) and RBI (2-times). He finished with 512 homers. Banks remains the most popular Cub of all time.

In 1955, Topps was in a card war with Bowman. Bowman had many players under exclusive contracts, so Topps was limited to a 206-card issue. The cards were colorful, with the backgrounds gradually changing from a lighter shade to a darker shade in looking at the card from left to right. The cards feature two high-quality photos on the front: a larger head shot and a smaller action shot. Graded PSA Mint 9. One of only twenty graded MINT with none rated higher from a PSA sampling of over almost 3,300 submissions.
