    Description

1954 Topps Hank Aaron #128 PSA NM-MT 8. With a title like "Home Run King" one thinks life must have been an abundance of comforts and public admiration. Sadly, this was not the experience of Hank Aaron. From his earliest days in the minor league where "Hammerin" Hank was the top producer for the Braves' Jacksonville affiliate in the segregated Deep South, he "led the league in everything but hotel accommodations" as one journalist quipped. The level of hate he endured as he approached the most sacred stat in all of baseball grew with each and every home run. Like Robinson, his legacy would remain one of brilliance in the face of immense ignorance and adversity throughout his Major League career.

Aaron hit the first of his 755 career home runs on April 23, 1954 in St. Louis. Segregation was still the law of the land. His Big League debut came at the expense of Bobby Thomson who broke his ankle during spring training. Aaron hit thirteen home runs in his debut year, it would be another twenty-years until his long ball output would dip below twenty. On September 5, 1954, Aaron ironically suffered the same injury as his predecessor, a broken ankle putting an end to his rookie campaign.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Offered is one of the finer examples thereof. In fact, out of more than four thousand submissions to PSA, only thirty unqualified examples--less than one percent--have ever bested the offered specimen. Bold colors and spectacular centering make this a particularly fine representative of the assigned grade.
