    Description

1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips Bob Feller PSA Mint 9. This amazing collectible has capitalized on its production's generous dimensions, softly toned colors, and thoughtful design to yield one of the hobby's most flattering portrayals of Cleveland Indians fireballer Bob Feller. The beyond-spectacular preservation quality enjoyed by this showpiece example aside, the Dan-Dee series -- in lesser, that is to say, most instances -- starkly illuminates the last fifty years'-worth of evolution in trading card distribution.

Prior to the advent of cards' recognition as keepsakes best maintained in attractively uncirculated condition, distributors seemed almost to find joy in flagellating their wares. Cards bounced from production lines, stuffed into product, constrained in ill-fitting packages -- all of these circumstances were more often the rule than the exception. And nowhere was this inattention to the prospect of long-term survival more harshly practiced than in the methods employed by Dan-Dee, which placed cards with its (greasy!) potato chips for just a single year in 1954.

Among more than 1,700 cards from the entire Dan-Dee issue that reside in PSA holders, just 26 pieces -- substantially less than two percent of the release's total census -- have successfully aspired to the Mint 9 level, and none has achieved GEM MT distinction. This Feller card, specifically, has garnered the ultimate evaluation for its issue, sharing that pinnacle position with just two counterparts. Barely handled Dan-Dee cards typically show a few widely spaced perf-tabs at the edges and corners -- vestiges of attachment to other cards before being separated at the factory -- and those tiny, remnant appendages show no hint of disturbance on this remarkable copy. Feller's image is impeccable on the card, and its overall appearance is extremely sharp. An extraordinary Hall of Fame representative from an always-challenging regional issue!
