1954 Bowman Mickey Mantle #65 SGC Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher. "He has more speed than any slugger I've ever seen, and more slug than any other speedster.... This kid ain't logical. It's very confusing," said New York Yankee manager Casey Stengel about Mickey Mantle during spring training in 1951. Joe DiMaggio had already announced that '51 would be his last season, and Stengel proclaimed Mantle as Joe's eventual successor in center field. Mantle was initially given #6, a number that shouted to the world that after Ruth (#3), Gehrig (#4) and DiMaggio (#5), Mantle would be the next Yankee superstar - and it all came true, as lucky number seven.

Of course, there were bumps along the road. Mantle, playing right field, tore ligaments in his knee after a near collision with DiMaggio in the '51 World Series. Mantle had to overcome a long-term problem with osteomyelitis in his leg. It's also well-documented that as a player Mantle abused alcohol for years. In 1961, Mantle and Roger Maris were in a dual assault upon Babe Ruth's 60 homer mark. An abscessed hip affected Mantle and forced him to miss key games late in the season, and Maris got his 61st. Mantle helped the Yankees win seven World Series, won the '56 Triple Crown, and was a 3-time AL MVP. He finished with 536 home runs.

Mantle had an exclusive Bowman contract for 1954. This issue has 224 cards, and they have a painted portrait on the front with (usually) a facsimile signature, in a bottom corner. Bowman sales were down in the past two seasons. Its card war with Topps continued, and to save money, Bowman used a cheaper cardboard than in earlier issues, and this has contributed to the cards now being very rare in high grade. Graded SGC Mint 9. One of only three graded MINT by SGC, with none rated higher.
