    Description

    Only twelve superior!

1953 Topps Mickey Mantle #82 PSA NM-MT 8. The Mick's debut season of 1951 had been an uneven affair, punctuated both by hints of his preternatural slugging power and by batting slumps so tenacious that the Yanks saw fit to demote their top prospect to forty games in the minors. But the 1952 season saw Mantle validate the enormous expectations that had been placed upon him, leaving no doubt that he was the rightful heir to the center field grass willed to him by a retiring Joe DiMaggio.

So the Commerce Comet was flying high when this important slab of cardboard was hatched from its wax, engaged in a season that would once again find him front and center in both the Midsummer and Fall Classics. While Mantle earned membership in the first series of the 1953 Topps set, his population here is not as far removed from that of the previous year's troubled final series as one might expect. Only twelve examples of this 1953 card have achieved a higher ranking than this one from the experts at PSA, compared to nine examples of the 1952 rookie that have scored Mint 9 or better.

The lower left full-bleed corner is the main obstacle to top grades in the 1953 set, but this example clears it with grace, and adds sharp corners and strong centering to the mix. Bright colors and clean registration complete the glowing condition report.
