    Description

1952 Bowman Willie Mays #218 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Five, None Higher. Jim Burris of the American Association Service Bureau once wrote, "Blessed with tremendous natural ability, Willie can do almost everything just a little better than the next fellow." He was talking about 19-year old Willie Mays. The first minor league baseball diamond Mays played on was with Class B Trenton affiliate in 1950 before his ascension to the AAA Millers in 1951. There he joined future Hall of Famers Hoyt Wilhelm and Ray Dandridge that season but Mays quickly earned a one-way ticket to the Big Apple, batting .477 in thirty-five games and dazzling spectators with his range and arm in the outfield. By late May, he was a Big Leaguer. As a pro, "The Say Hey Kid" would earn his immortality in the black and orange of the New York and San Francisco Giants. From season his talents impressed as he would earn the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year Award and participate in one of baseball's most famous games (Bobby Thomson's Called Shot contest) and meet fellow rookie Mickey Mantle in the 1951 Fall Classic. Along with fellow rookie Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays is responsible for a large percentage of why this set ranks within the top ten lists of collectors' favored issues. His cards are a key relic from that unforgettable golden age before baseball came of age.

With submissions that number over the 1,000 mark, this card is graded PSA Mint 9 and is one of only five to earn that "Mint 9" rating from PSA! Not a single card has yet to generate the "Gem MT" assessment. But it's not often that one lays eyes upon any card from the set quite so close to pristine as the offered specimen, much less a second year appearance by one of the heroic legends of the sport. Troublesome print defects and gum and wax staining, so often a problem with this issue, are limited to two stray spots of cyan, staining is entirely absent here. Centering is best described as "a hairline away from perfection." In fact, a studied attempt to find flaws are largely in vain. Any 1950's collection is not complete without this card with only a handful of fortunate hobbyists who can claim to own a "Mint" example!
