    Description

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 PSA NM-MT 8 (OC). Just six months ago, Heritage Auctions sold an unqualified example of this card in a PSA NM-MT 8 holder for $615,000, a price that this specimen would hit if the Bowman card cutting process didn't miss its mark by a scant few millimeters. Otherwise, this is a virginal beauty, with bold colors, crisp registration, and a virtual absence of wear.

While the 1952 Topps has long been considered the ultimate Mantle representation, count us among those who think this older sibling deserves just as much love. This is, after all, the Mick's true rookie, and we've always loved the artistic sensibilities of the early 1950's Bowmans, with their bold outlines and intriguing backgrounds. The 1951 Mantle also offers The Standard Catalog's only view of Mantle's original number "6" jersey, which is a particular treat for the Yankees historians among us. Note that the other famous rookie of this issue, the Willie Mays #305, appears within this auction at the identical PSA rating.
